Who is a texas folk hero. i was really desperate to break into some of the better places, where people came to hear music by guys like shake and dana cooper and michael marcoulier. shake was leaving this music store and i followed him out to the parking lot and said, "hey, i'm a big fan -- how do i go about opening for shake russell?" and he said, "you play solo?" and i said, "yeah." he said, "well, call my road manager. i'm playing a place wednesday night and you can come and do a set before me, and i'll introduce you to the owner of the club and maybe you can get a gig." w&s: wow. without even hearing you. cb: right. so, i went over and played for him and sure enough got a gig out of it. he took a chance on me. i could've gotten up there and sucked really bad, but he liked what he heard and decided that he was going to help me every chance he could, and he did. from that point, shake started giving me a little money out of his own cut to do a set before his set at a bunch of the other places that he worked. i subsequently got gigs out of that and ended up doing sets with shake where i'd open a set for him, then he would play, then i'd come out for the last set and we'd do a set together. and we became good friends and started writing together. he and hayden and i wrote "put yourself in my shoes"and "one more payment" [one more payment]; "'til santa's gone milk and cookies ; " from the looking for christmas album; and "you don't need me now" and "our kind of love"[nothin' but the taillights]. a great friendship came out of that, and i never forgot that he made the difference for me. i continued to play solo like that for years, until i found my first manager, bill ham. just before that i had met hayden, who was temporarily playing guitar in a band i hired to back me on a country-club gig that paid really well. it was "stupid money" back in those days; to us it was just ridiculous. i think we each made 150 bucks that night. w&s: our whole band played for that kind of money back in the mid-'60s. cb: oh, yeah. hayden and i started.
